2024 Issue 1 - Term 1

Principal's Report

Welcome Back

A very warm welcome back to you all as we come to the end of week two of 2024 and our first newsletter of the year.. It has been a very smooth start to the year and I want to thank all of our students for making such a positive start to their learning for 2024. Can I remind everyone that all children need to be wearing hats while outside this term. The sun is very hot out at the moment and sun safety is very important at this time of year. We held a special luna new year session today where the children had the opportunity to take part in a range of luna new year  activities to celebrate the year of the dragon. I want to thank My Hoa lao shi for organising the session and I would also like to wish everyone a very happy and prosperous year of the dragon.

Parent Information Sessions for English and Chinese

We will be holding our English and Chinese information sessions next week. The Chinese Program Information night will be on Tuesday 13th February from 3:45pm until 4:45pm and the English Program Information night will be held on Wednesday 14th February from 3:45pm until 4:45pm. Both sessions will take place in the atrium, we look forward to seeing you there.

Acceptable Use of Digital Technologies Agreement

In order for our students to use Digital Technologies and ICT equipment, we require both students and their parent to sign that they agree and will comply with the terms of acceptable use and expected standards and behaviour, as set out in the Agreement, Annexure A- Digital Learning Policy. Teachers of students in Years 3-6, will be explaining the Agreement in class, and then have the students sign. Students in F-2 will do a simplified activity in class that explains ways in which students have an expectation to communicate respectfully and protect personal information. They will also ask students to sign in class. All classes will then send the Agreement home for parents to sign. Please take the time to discuss the Agreement and Digital Learning behaviour expectations and then return to the classroom teacher at your earliest convenience.

Lion Dance Performance

We are delighted to announce that the Hong De Lion and Dragon Dance Association will be enriching our school with a vibrant Lion Dance performance to celebrate the upcoming Lunar New Year! This event will take place on the 15th of February at 3:00 PM under the basketball court. Thank you Zara Siew for organising that for us! To add to the festive spirit, we invite all students/attendees to participate in a special activity. A gold coin donation is suggested, and the funds collected will be placed into traditional red pockets and then playfully fed into the lion's mouth—a delightful and symbolic gesture of good luck. Let's share the joy of the Lunar New Year together! We look forward to seeing you there!

North Richmond Communty Festival

The Richmond Community festival will be taking place this Saturday 10th of February from 10am till 5pm at the Richmond housing estate (cnr Lennox and Highett sts). There will be live music, food stalls, cultural markets, art workshops, and fashion parades. Most importantly some of our students will be performing as part of the Mzuri Dance group. Its sure to be a great day.

Masterplan update

On Wednesday I met with representatives of the Flemings landscape design company to begin initial discussions about our grounds masterplan. I took them on a tour of the playgrounds and we discussed possible projects that could happen in the future, and how students and parents could contribute to the master planning process. Our next step is to form student focus groups to build on the work done with Judy McKinty late last year.

School council

The process for forming the 2024 school council will be taking place soon. Please watch for Compass announcements detailing the process and how you can nominate yourself or someone else for school council over the next few weeks.
