Junior School Council Report

Hi everyone,

It’s your school captain, Florence. I am here to share the last happenings that have been going on for the past fortnight.

The foundations learned about density in science. They also played a game called” boom boom clap'' as well as “the reading fluency game” in chinese.

Science: Rainbow In a Jar

In science we made a rainbow in a jar. We put some liquids in and it formed a rainbow tube.

“It was fun because it was interesting.” - Frida (Grade 6)

“ I thought it was fun because there was suspense when pouring in the things” - Calypso (Grade 6)

“It was good and cool.” Yusuf (Grade 6)

End of Year Picnic

The end of year picnic is coming up on the last Thursday of the year. Every class will be doing a song and that’s when the movie we’ve been making is going to have a premiere! It is on the 15th of December and starts 3:45 - 5:45pm. Come down but remember it is a picnic so bring some food!

This is the grade 6s' last week at APS. We’re graduating! We have been busy organizing for the event. The graduation ceremony will be on Friday the 16th of December. I know we will all miss this school very much.

Last Day

It’s the final week of school for 2022 really soon! The last day of school will be on Tuesday the 20th and the pick up time will be at 1:00pm. Then it’s time for the SUMMER!!

Thanks to everyone for making this an awesome year, and this will be the last JSC report for the year!! Enjoy the last week everyone!

Visit from Raymond Yang - Co-Founder and Executive Director of Just Feel HK

This week, we had the pleasure of hosting Raymond Yang, the co-founder and Executive Director of Just Feel HK. Just Feel HK is an not-for-profit organisation that works with schools on implement wellbeing programs and upskiling teachers and parents in Nonviolent and Compassionate Communication.

Due various cultural characteristics, schools typically have a weaker focus on wellbeing compared to Australian schools and the communication style between teachers, parents and students is not a topic that often features in educators' reflections.

Raymond had fantastic conversation with Caroline and Lukas to explore the range of wellbeing programs on offer at APS and how our structure supports students with different wellbeing needs. Raymond also shared various wellbeing resources in Chinese developed by Just Feel HK which also gave the Chinese team a sample of how wellbeing can be incorporated into Chinese classes.

For those who are interested in the topic of Nonviolent Communication (NVC), feel free to explore Just Feel HK's Youtube Channel (all videos are bilingual) or join this Melbourne-based practice group coordinated by NVC Australia.

National Excellence in Teaching Awards (NEiTA) - Principals Award for Leadership 2022

Thank you to the school community for nominating me for the NEiTA Founders' Principals Award for Leadership 2022.

In Semester 2, I learnt that I was successful in being shortlisted and I was later interviewed by an expert panel before being advised in October that I had been successful in being selected as one of the three awardees for 2022.

The NEiTA ceremony took place on Wednesday, 30 November online. Thank you for all your support with the school review and reform agenda over the last 2+ years. It is nice to end my time here with national level recognition and have APS featured in national level publicity.

Hope to see everyone at the End-of-Year Picnic and for those unable to come, wishing everyone a safe and happy break and hope to cross paths again in the near future!

Global Engagement Update

Over the last few weeks, we have continued run exciting projects and activities as part of our Global Engagement Program.

Year 3 with Heping Elementary School in Yunlin County, Taiwan

Recently, students received beautiful bookmarks from Taiwan with their names written in calligraphy by their buddies. The writing was extremely beautiful for their age and even staff received some as gifts. Students have been working on a card in return to wrap up a fantastic year of activities!

Year 4 with Xinhai Elementary School in Taipei City, Taiwan

This week, Year 4 students met with their buddy class in Taipei online. They prepared self-introductions, and also gave each other a tour of the school via their laptop. Both schools are reasonably small in size, so the students got to see every corner of each other's school, including the Principal's Office!

Year 5/6 with Tungshing Elementary School in Taichung City, Taiwan

This week, we received a mystery box from our buddy classes in Taichung which features gifts of cultural significance for Taichung. We plan to distribute towards the end of term as a token of congratulation and celebration.

We are very appreciative of the efforts by students and teachers in Taichung, particularly the enthusiasm of Liam (their Australian English teacher) for an eventful year of events for both APS and Taiwanese students!

Stanley xiaozhang presenting on Global Engagement at the 2022 Conference (and 75th Anniversary) of the Modern Languages Teachers Association of Victoria

Following the receipt of the Victorian Multicultural Awards for Excellence, Stanley xiaozhang had an opportunity to present on our Global Engagement strategy at the 2022 MLTAV Conference last week.

The title of the presentation was "Reimagining Global Engagement" and we proudly shared our philosophy, principles and program design with Victoria-based languages teachers from all sectors. We unpacked how our activities promoted intercultural understanding and intercultural capability and how we designed these activities with a focus on alignment with the school's vision and mission.

End of Year Picnic - Thursday 15 December @ 3:45pm-5:45pm

We look forward to joining together as a community at the End of Year picnic to celebrate our successful school year!

It is going to be a fun afternoon of student performances and the premiere screening of "The Gorilla of Abbotsford Primary" by APS Production.
The picnic will take place on Thursday 15 December from 3:45pm to 5:45pm

You are very welcome to bring your own food and picnic rug.

The Fundraising Sub-Committee will also be running a sausage sizzle, bake sale, raffle, and second hand uniform sale. All funds raised will go towards the Abbotsford Primary School “Make a Difference” fund, which provides opportunities to attend extra-curricular activities for families that would not otherwise be able to access them.

Please see the recent Compass announcement for details on how contribute items to the bake sale and second hand uniform sale, and how to sign up as a parent volunteer.

In addition, this year, in the spirit of wider community giving, we will be collecting an optional gold coin donation on entry to the picnic for Foodbank Victoria, an organisation that sources food for people in need, which will help to alleviate the pressure of the end of year for many families.

Camp Australia, our Outside School Hours Care (OSHC), will also be raising funds for Foodbank at the coffee van that they have kindly provided for the picnic. The van will provide complimentary coffee, tea, chai, and hot chocolate to all end of year picnic attendees.

Finally, we would like to thank the following local businesses for their generosity in providing donations for our raffle:

  • Woolworths at The Hive
  • Collingwood Children’s Farm
  • Yarra Leisure, City of Yarra
  • Studio Pilates Richmond
  • PineappleLumps hair salon
  • Santha King

And a special thank you to Sheree from Trucked Up Entertainment for providing us with the amazing stage facilities!
