Principal's Report

Reconciliation Week

This week our children have been engaging with a range of activities and experiences relating to reconciliation week. As you may have seen from the posters that are up at the front doors, the theme of this year’s Reconciliation Week is to “Be a voice for Generations.” Students have explored ways that everyone can be involved in promoting reconciliation here in Australia, both within our school and in the wider community.

Bilingual principals network meeting

This week I attended my first Bilingual schools network meeting. I was warmly welcomed into the network, and I can see what a great support it will be to me as a new principal. The network discussed the recent changes to the department’s enrolment policy, supports for bilingual programs in kindergarten, migration support for the employment of bilingual teachers and professional development opportunities for our teaching staff.

Gardening Club

Autumn has past and winter is upon us in the garden. Lizzie has been leading a great group of kids in the garden making good use of the large amount of leaves that have fallen over autumn. These leaves are perfect for mulching garden areas, and as brown material in our compost and worm farms. General weeding and care of the garden beds ensure that they stay healthy and productive over winter. Not only is the gardening club a great way for students to take part in caring for our school, but it also provides a wonderful opportunity to explore science, sustainability and nature in a truly authentic context.

PLC training update

The Professional Learning Communities team are continuing with their training and the related work within the school. A PLC cycle focusing on improving aspects of mathematics teaching has been completed and the team will be presenting this to the PLC trainers in the coming weeks.

Enrolment update

I have had several conversations with representatives from the education department regarding the recent changes to the enrolment policy. They are keenly aware of the potential impact of the changes on bilingual schools and supports are available for schools if needed. The department will be working with bilingual schools, including Abbotsford Primary, in the coming months to devise potential solutions to ensure that entry to bilingual schools on curriculum grounds is still available to parents. I will update the community as more information comes to hand.

Thor Pederson update

Last year the school was visited by Thor Pederson who was attempting to visit every single country on earth in an unbroken journey without using air travel. After nearly ten years he finally arrived at his last destination, the Maldives recently to complete his journey. We congratulate Thor on his amazing journey and we hope he takes some time to rest!

Students and Procrastination

Dear Parents,

Please find here a paper on the most common outcome of anxiety-procrastination, written by Andrew Fuller, Clinical Psychologist and Family Therapist.

This paper is not a product of ChatGPT. It is the outcome of real research and how it applies to real people.

Prep bags 2023 Evaluation Survey

Prep bags 2023 survey

Have your say about this year’s Prep bags in a short survey, closing Sunday 9 July

Each year, the Department of Education gives every Prep student attending a Victorian government school a bag full of goodies to celebrate this milestone in their education journey. The information and educational resources in the bags are designed to help Prep students and their families thrive from the start of Term 1.

The department is inviting parents and carers of current Prep students to participate in a short survey about the 2023 Prep bags, by 5 pm on Sunday 9 July 2023.

Your feedback will help the department learn what families liked about the Prep bags and what can be improved in 2024. You can have your say at 2023 Prep Bags – Evaluation Survey.

The survey takes 5 to 10 minutes to complete, and responses are anonymous. For more information on this year’s Prep bags, refer to Prep bags.
