Hello everyone, I'm Rocco and I'm Annick, your new school captains. We will inform you about the last two week's events and news.

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the division swimming trials. Sadly, no one from our school made it to the state championships.

On Friday 22 Grevillia house captain Safa will be running the first fundraising event of the year. The funds will go towards Judy Mcginty’s report. Last year, Judy reported what students would like their new playground to look like. The event will be a gold coin donation.

On Tuesday the twelfth of march the vice and school captains went to Melbourne's elementary school Dream and Lead conference. They learnt how to lead with confidence and responsibility.

The trip to China has been made final. A handful of grade 5/6s will be going to Huabei, Beijing and Shanghai, china.

The preps recently went to the Teddy bear picnic. They performed Twinkle twinkle little star in chinese. A group of firefighters came to tell the preps about their jobs as firemen. Principal's Report

End of Term 1

And just like that the end of term 1 is upon us. I want to thank all members of the school community for what has been a very smooth and focused term of learning at APS. Congrats to Pip Cole and Sophie for completing their first full term with us! I would like to thank Debra Ong and Marianna Karagkounis who are finishing up their terms at school council, your work is much appreciated. I would also like to thank the parents and carers who have been supporting the school through volunteering in the classroom, the library or at sporting events such as the district swimming sports. And most importantly I would like to thank the students and staff of APS for making this the wonderful place that it is every day.

Chess awards Term 1

Congratulations to the following students who have won awards for their performance in chess this term. Awards will be presented at next Thursday’s assembly.

  • Best and Fairest – Brayden Nguyen
  • 2nd Place  - Jaofeno Rakotomamonjy
  • 3rd Place – Timothy Soh

Rolling Facilities Audit

The rolling facilities audit has been completed and a report has been sent to the school for my approval. Happily, there were not safety concerns raised in the audit and the school is in good condition generally. The roof above the senior school library and the upstairs toilet were identified as priority issues for the VSBA. I will make comment on the report and return it to the VSBA.

Division Swimming

Congratulations to the following students who represented our school at the division swimming sports on the 12th of March. You swam well and represented our school with pride.

Masterplan

The Junior school council has been working with all classes to complete a questionnaire that was provided to us by Flemmings to assist them in developing the masterplan. We will be meeting with them early in term 2 to move this process along and to seek input from parents.

Chinese Curriculum Parent working group

FangNi and I met with the Chinese Curriculum Parent group last week. The meeting was very productive and we discussed the development of the CAL curriculum, transition into Richmond High’s accelerated Chinese program and opportunities for volunteering within the Chinese program at the school. If you would be interest in joining this group, or any school council subcommittee please contact us at the school.

Richmond High Chinese information

Richmond High School will be holding an information session for parents focusing on their Chinese program on the 17th of April. There is a detailed flyer attached to this newsletter.

Vacation Care Trial

Vacation care will go ahead these coming holidays. Please see the details attached to this newsletter for how to book and to see what programs are on offer through Camp Australia these holidays.

NAPLAN

The NAPLAN testing window will conclude for 2024 on Monday the 25th of March. I would like to praise our students for the determined and thoughtful way in which they attended to the assessments, they are all to be congratulated. Almost all eligible students sat the tests. There were a handful of technical issues as is typical with the online NAPLAN testing platform however these were managed according to testing procedures and students whose tests were interrupted were given additional time so that they were not unduly disadvantaged.

Annual Report

I have completed drafting the annual report for 2023. Once it has been approved by school council, I will call a community meeting later in the year to present the report to the school community.

China Exchange

We have had a great response from the community to our China exchange program. Deposits are being taken to secure places so that bookings can be made with some certainty. The first of a series of information sessions will he held early in term 2 to discuss logistics, communication, itinerary and parent questions.
